The first sales figures of the HomePod are not quite what Apple expected. To prevent further disappointment, the company scales back the production of the smart speaker.

HomePod Sales Are Disappointing For Apple

That is what Bloomberg writes today on the basis of a source that would be close to Apple. At the end of March, the company in Cupertino decided to reduce the number of orders at Inventec Corporation – the supplier of the speaker.

That is striking, because a previous investigation shows that the HomePod initially did very well. At the end of January the speaker turned out to have one third of the smart speaker market in the US. That percentage, however, fell rapidly when the speaker was actually well available.

“In the first 10 weeks, the HomePod achieved ten percent of the smart speaker market. Google has fourteen percent and Amazon still holds the vast 73 percent “, according to Slice market research. Three weeks later, the share of the HomePod dropped to only four percent. This also creates a surplus of stocks in Apple Stores, which according to Bloomberg sell on average less than ten per day. Apple obviously did not respond to the message.

The disappointing sales is not the first blow that the HomePod gets to endure. Prior to the launch, the development would have been stopped several times, because the company was always overtaken by new Amazon speakers.

Still Time To Turn The Tide

However, this disappointing sales does not mean that the HomePod is a flop. The Apple Watch also had a difficult start and is now one of Apple’s most popular products. In addition, the speaker is only available in a very limited number of countries, and in the coming months it will also be in stores in Germany and France.

In our HomePod review we were very pleased with the sound quality of the speaker. It is mainly the restrictions imposed by Apple itself and the questionable quality of Siri that prevent the product. These problems, however, are all software-based, and could theoretically be tackled with a number of good updates.
